Unmarried Couples in Iran

Travel Iran with your dog

Can You Travel Together? Yes, for foreign couples, traveling, camping, and staying together in Iran is completely fine. The law formally forbids staying together outside marriage, but it’s not applied to tourists. Hotels, authorities, and locals are used to foreign couples and don’t ask for proof of marriage.

Hotels & Accommodation

  • For foreigners, most hotels don’t ask for marriage certificates if both guests are foreigners. Staff usually register you as “Mr. & Mrs.” for convenience.
  • If one partner is Iranian (or dual-national), rules are stricter — technically you need separate rooms, though smaller guesthouses sometimes turn a blind eye. Some guesthouses let you stay together if you book an extra room.
  • When staying with an Iranian host, be discreet: avoid public affection, respect house rules, and clarify sleeping arrangements.

Cultural Etiquette

  • Locals are curious and hospitable; many assume you’re married and may invite you to stay indoors instead.
  • Avoid kissing or hugging in public; holding hands is fine in liberal areas.
  • Dress modestly and act respectfully, especially around families or religious sites.
