Iran Tourist Visa Guide 2026

Online Application with an Agency
Since October 2025, all travelers must apply for the Iranian e-Visa through an authorised agency. Applications can be submitted no earlier than three months before your expected arrival in Iran.
Required information:
- Pick-up location: Choose the embassy, consulate, or airport where you want to collect your visa. You can apply while traveling—residency or citizenship in that country is not required (see all available options on the MFA website under Place of Issue).
- Length of stay: Up to 30 days. The visa is issued for the exact number of days you request, so apply for the full 30 days for flexibility.
- Passport photo: Recent photo with plain white background; hijab is not required for women. More info here.
- Passport scan: Must show more than 6 months validity.
- Itinerary: Simple day-by-day plan (date, location, accommodation). Campervan travelers do not need to list accommodation. Actual travel does not need to match the itinerary.
- Personal details: Basic information about family, education, and work.
- Agency fee: Usually around €30.

Visa Approval or Denial
Processing typically takes around 10 business days.
- Denial: The agency will inform you of the reason and advise whether reapplying makes sense.
- Approval: You will receive the Visa Grant Notice.

Visa Collection: Embassy, Consulate, or Airport
You have 90 days after approval to either enter Iran via your chosen airport or visit the embassy/consulate you selected. Contact your agency if you need to change the pick-up location.
Requirements & fees (cash only, EUR or USD):
- Visa Grant Notice
- Passport (valid 6+ months)
- Embassy fee: €50 (next day) or €75 (same day). In many cases, insisting politely may get you same-day issuance at the lower fee.
- Airport fee: Higher, varies by nationality (€50–150).
- Mandatory travel insurance: €10
You will receive your Electronic Visa both as an A4 printout and by email.

Immigration
Your Electronic Visa does not restrict your point of entry. You may enter Iran via any border—land, sea, or air—within 60 days of visa issuance.
Upon arrival, immigration will stamp your printed A4 visa. Keep this document safe, as hotels, police, and airport authorities will request it throughout your stay.
Your visa validity begins on the day you enter Iran and lasts for the number of days granted. Visa extensions are possible inside the country.
Iranian Visa extension
Visa extensions in Iran are very cheap (less than 1€) and easy, when visiting the right office.
How often you can extend your visa depends on the individual officer, but three to four times were possible in the past. Typically a visa gets extended by 30 days, but 60 day extensions are possible as well. In rare cases, extensions were 15 days or less.
When should you extend your visa? Only extend your visa when it’s close to expiring. I recommend to not extend earlier than 10 days before expiration.
In theory, visa extensions can be done in all of the 31 Iranian province capitals (and nowhere else), however, we recommend getting extensions in the larger cities where the officers are more familiar with the procedure. From the experience of travellers, the best cities to extend the visa are: Bandar Abbas, Bushehr, Rasht, Yazd.
Requirements for the visa extension:
- Passport (bring 3 copies)
- Original visa grant notice with stamp (bring 3 copies)
- Passport photos (only sometimes required)
- Fee: 500,000 IRR (visa fee) + 500,000 IRR (administrative fee)
IMPORTANT
If you are travelling by vehicle, you must also extend your CDP when extending your visa. The CDP can be extended in the same province capitals, however, custom offices for CDP extensions are in different locations than Visa extension centers. Read more in our CDP Guide.
